MMS
AMÉRICAS

A regional network for malaria molecular surveillance

ABOUT US

MMS Américas is a regional network focused on strengthening molecular malaria surveillance across Latin America and the Caribbean. The network supports laboratory capacity building, participation in external quality assurance programs, harmonized protocols, data-sharing frameworks and access to technical resources to improve regional surveillance and inform malaria elimination efforts.

Objective:

To build malaria molecular surveillance capacity to support malaria elimination in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Conduct a regional assessment to identify current laboratory capacities, training needs and operational gaps to guide targeted capacity-building efforts and support harmonized MMS implementation.

Build technical expertise in genotyping, sequencing and bioinformatics through regional workshops and exchange visits, enabling laboratories to progressively adopt standardized MMS workflows.

Strengthen quality assurance systems by supporting partner laboratories’ participation in the WHO Malaria NAAT EQA program, including technical follow-up and corrective actions.

Develop an open-access, multilingual regional platform to share SOPs, technical guidelines, training materials and validated best practices across partner laboratories.

Establish governance structures, coordination mechanisms and communication channels to ensure long-term collaboration, transparency and sustainability of the regional network.
